Tips on Training your Forklift Operators

A powered industrial truck like a forklift is a boon for modern day industry workers. It makes their life simple and reduces the amount of labour required for all the heavy duty in the industry. However, in the hands of an inexperienced operator, a machine like this can be extremely dangerous as well. Operators need to be trained on the safety tips and regulations to follow while working on forklifts, and every time a new truck design is incorporated into the workforce, they need to be re-trained in order to be able to operate it well.

There are some pointers to keep in mind when training your forklift operators.

Who requires this training?

All industrial truck operators and trainees who will be operating forklift trucks in the future require training. An employee who normally has duties other than driving forklifts, but sometimes does operate a forklift in the absence of regular operators should also be included in the training.

What are the training formats used?

The training provided to the operators should ideally include a combination of lecture, video, and other formal modes of instruction, as well as practical demonstration and exercises. The training must include a proper evaluation of the operator’s understanding of the rules and regulations to be followed while operating fork lifts and the safety precautions to be taken in the workplace.

Since different forklifts have different operator requirements, it is important that a proper standardized course structure be followed.
