Basic Web Design Orientations

Before proceeding with a web design, one of the considerations of a web designer is its layout. How it looks depends on what the client wants to see or what effect is needed to achieve. In fact, a website’s layout can have an impact on the interest of the website’s online visitor; this can either pique the interest of the visitor or let him casually browse through it. Here are the three basic orientations of a website made possible by web design.



A vertical web design orientation, also known as portrait, is the most common website orientation and can be used even on the simplest websites. A portrait orientation easily allows an online visitor to browse the contents of the page up and down without any hassle. This is also good for websites with multiple links of articles or multimedia to read, watch or listen about as this provides an easier reading and or browsing experience for the person browsing the page. Almost every known website makes use of the portrait orientation from company websites, personal blogs, news websites and even video, audio and image streaming or hosting websites just to name a few.


The opposite of the portrait layout is the landscape and it is primarily used for making the most out of a website that is dependent on images topped off with special effects. Websites with a landscape orientation are rarely used but if these are employed in web design, are effective in showing websites with timeline contents or single-page websites with interactive graphics or buttons that pop out when activated. The landscape website orientation is often used in websites for movies, musical acts, some video game websites, event organizers or photographers. It is also used for child-friendly websites which feature simple games and activities for young children.

Combined using frames

A combination of the two website orientations can be used which can prove to be advantageous the web design has been wisely made. Frames can divide the screen properly with a vertical or horizontal space set on the extreme left, right, top or bottom side of the website for links or advertisement spaces. This will help online visitors to have a better navigation in and around the website which saves them the trouble of finding a specific article or media to check or read. Combining both orientations in the form of frames will have to be carefully designed or else it will not be an attractive sight for the online visitor.
